FilmDaft.com is an educational website about film and video production, covering screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, sound, film theory, acting, animation, and film set language.
It is made for students, teachers, and creators who want straight answers, verified examples, and clear breakdowns rooted in real film craft, plus definitions and workflows you can use in prep, on set, and post.
Why FilmDaft Exists
FilmDaft started in 2019 as a way to translate years of research on film language into tools that are easy to read, teach, and apply. We believe you shouldn’t need a film degree to understand visual storytelling or structure your screenplay. Every article uses plain language, structured navigation, and scene-accurate examples.
Who’s Behind It
FilmDaft is created by Jan Sørup, an indie filmmaker, educator, and founder of the production company Apertura.dk. Jan applies visual thinking and deep research to make each article practical, film-literate, and grounded in real creative work.

What You’ll Learn Here
The site is structured around key areas of film craft. Explore our main sections:
- Cinematography – Lighting, lenses, framing, camera movement
- Screenwriting – Structure, literary devices, character arcs, scene formatting
- Film History & Theory – Movements, genres, analysis, world cinema
- Pre-Production – Casting, locations, planning, storyboarding
- Production – On-set workflow, crew roles, shooting days
- Post-Production – Editing, color grading, visual effects, software
- AI in film and video – Where it fits, where it breaks, and how to keep control of tone, continuity, and authorship
You’ll also find breakdowns on color theory, cinematographic techniques, visual motifs, and more, always grounded in real film examples and written at a high school and college level. You can browse all sections from the main menu.
How We Write
Every article is crafted with clarity and structure in mind. We avoid AI filler and generic lists. All posts follow FilmDaft’s in-house editorial rules for accuracy, tone, and visual clarity. You can read more about our editorial process and content standards here.
Limitations
FilmDaft doesn’t cover celebrity news or trending short-form content. We only do gear reviews to a limited extent. Some topics (like documentary filmmaking, production accounting, or branded content) are beyond our scope. But where possible, we link out to trusted resources.

I am an actress from the Midwest. I have had a passion for acting since my first stage role as a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz at 11. Since then, I have participated in multiple plays, musicals, acting classes, and film productions. I have always felt a passion for performance and telling the meaningful stories of others.
I have a BA in theatre, graduating from Saginaw Valley State University in 2019, where I received professional acting and vocal training.
