The US has some of the most well-known film schools in the world. They vary a lot in cost, teaching style, and what you can actually make while you are there.
Types of film schools in the US
University programs — places like NYU Tisch, USC, and UCLA are part of large universities. You get access to big facilities, strong alumni networks, and connections to the industry. They tend to be expensive.
Conservatories — the AFI Conservatory is the main example. It takes a small number of students and focuses almost entirely on making films. Acceptance is very competitive.
Liberal arts programs — schools like Northwestern and Boston University teach film alongside other academic subjects. Good if you want a broader education and are not sure you want to go all-in on filmmaking yet.
Trade-focused schools — Full Sail and similar schools focus on practical skills. They can get you into the industry faster, but they are different from academic programs. Do your research before committing.
Cost
Film school in the US is expensive. Private school tuition can run from $40,000 to $70,000 a year. Public universities like UCLA or UT Austin are cheaper, especially for state residents.
If you are coming from outside the US, expect to pay out-of-state or international tuition rates, which are higher.
For international students
You will need an F-1 student visa to study full-time in the US. Most schools guide you through the process. Some offer scholarships specifically for international students — it is worth asking.
Industry connections
If you want to work in Hollywood or the US film industry, studying in Los Angeles makes a real difference. USC, UCLA, AFI, Chapman, and Loyola Marymount are all close to the industry. New York schools like NYU and Columbia also have strong connections to film, TV, and advertising.
